PERSONAL CPD - QUESTIONS AND GUIDANCE
What is CPD?
CPD (Continuing Personal/Professional Development) is
defined as the holistic commitment to structured skills enhancement and personal
or professional competence.
The common definition of continuing professional development
is:
"the systematic maintenance, improvement and
broadening of knowledge, understanding and skills and the development of the
personal qualities necessary to undertake your duties throughout your
working life".
From this definition it is clear that CPD is a process which enables you to
keep up-to-date and to develop new knowledge and skills on a continuous basis.
What is the timescale for the Planner?
Personal development plans can provide a schedule to work to
and it is suggested that you review your plan at least once a year. The Planner
is intended to cover a twelve-month period. However, you may wish to revisit and
update your objectives more frequently than this, in which case the Planner
would cover a shorter period. You will need to photocopy the sheets for each
further cycle.
How often should I complete the Planner?
With renewed emphasis on the quality of CPD, the Planner
should be completed on a regular basis; say every three months. CPD is a means
of managing change and as change is a key factor of everyday professional life,
you will need to review your development plans throughout the year.
How does the Planner take account of individual
circumstances?
There is no unique way of completing it. The Planner is a
personal document and you may well find that the framework provided does not
exactly suit your circumstances or your needs. There may also be specific
systems in place in your own organisations which require a different method of
recording.
