An exploration of syndromes you have probably never heard of but may encounter one day. Professionals working in the neuro sector are familiar with many conditions including traumatic brain injury, stroke, encephalitis, hypoxic brain damage and dementia to mention a few. Sometimes we need to assess patients with unusual diagnoses that we have never come across before. This course will inform you of 7 rare and unusual syndromes which you may encounter one day.

In this webinar we will discuss the incidence and demographic of the unique neurodiverse individuals living with ABI and ADHD, learning how to observe, adjust and modify tools and approaches to mitigate the additional challenges of an injured brain, and why, despite repeated approached and methodology, why they seem to make little inroads.

There is a critical need for intensive hands-on clinical teaching in the formulation, application, and integration of interventions for both cognitive and emotional consequences of acquired brain injury. This pre-recorded conference is presented by Saugatuck Institute of Neuropsychological Rehabilitation (SINR) will include a first ever combined perspective from the British, Australian and American approaches to neuropsychological rehabilitation.

This presentation is an evidence-based assessment of neurocognitive and neurobehavioral functions. The session will commence with a brief overview of what an evidence-based neuropsychological assessment entails, especially as relevant to a medicolegal context and then focus in more detail on medicolegal assessment of neurocognitive and neurobehavioral domains, including relevant evidence-based considerations and potential ‘trial & error’ pitfalls to avoid. Finally, evaluation of the validity of presentation will be considered). There will be consideration of both external and embedded measures, procedural questions and finessing of the wording of reports to embody fundamental evidence-based principles.

This conference introduces a fresh perspective by combining professional expertise with insights from individuals with lived experience of childhood brain injury and cerebral palsy. National clinicians and lived experience professionals will deliver in-depth presentations on key topics such as identity development, education transitions, brain scan research, and lifelong challenges with cerebral palsy. Co-produced content will highlight neuropsychological rehabilitation approaches that are meaningful and relevant, fostering hope and resilience for children and families. Additional sessions will cover the impact of sport, the power of co-production, and emerging trends in clinical research to better support children with brain injuries.

Experts will discuss the application of neurobehavioral rehabilitation, particularly focusing on challenging behaviour, its cost-effectiveness in community settings, and strategies for individuals often excluded from rehabilitation. Key topics include integrating learning theory, addressing ethical issues, and engaging caregivers and stakeholders. The day also covers technology's role in managing behaviour change and addresses issues such as microaggressions in clinical teams. Through case studies and practical examples, the conference aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current challenges and successful solutions in neurobehavioral rehabilitation.

Presenting the latest evidence and best practice in community neurorehabilitation: and launching a community neurorehabilitation network for ongoing networking and collaboration after the event.

In the case of severe brain injury the impact is likely felt across a lifetime, directly by the injured party but also indirectly by family members. An international body of research, augmented by the experience of skilled practitioners, has developed to help identify how best to provide rehabilitation and support to people with acquired brain injuries. But what of the family? What do we know about the family experience of acquired brain injury, what do family members need, what do they say works for them and how do we change practice to accommodate and integrate their knowledge, their love and their needs? What do professionals need to understand better in order to respond appropriately to the trauma experienced by family members, to support true partnerships with people who are motivated by love and care but who have needs of their own too? How can we ensure our input and intervention also addresses family adjustment? There will be opportunities throughout the day to share experience, learn from each other and be inspired by the stories told. We cannot turn back the clock, we cannot prevent the brain injury from having occurred but perhaps we can learn from each other to respond in a way that reduces rather than reinforces trauma and builds resilience, focussing upon what works and why.

This masterclass begins with a discussion of the main problems faced by people with acquired non progressive brain injury (focusing on those with traumatic brain injury, stroke, encephalitis and hypoxic brain damage). We consider how to distinguish between different cognitive problems and between cognitive, emotional and behavioural problems. The workshop continues with a description of ways to assess people with brain injury. This section will include different approaches to neuropsychological assessment, the comparison between neuropsychological and functional assessments and the kinds of questions these assessments can and cannot answer. This is followed by a description of the nature and purpose of rehabilitation and some general principles to help those with cognitive deficits. The issue of restoration versus compensation is addressed. We then look at memory, executive, attentional, visuospatial and visuoperceptual difficulties in turn and consider ways to remediate these problems. We address group versus individual therapy and how to design treatment programmes for people with cognitive impairments. Clinical examples are provided together with evidence for the effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation. It will be shown that cognitive rehabilitation can help people to compensate for, bypass or reduce their everyday problems and thus survive more efficiently in their own most appropriate environments.

How Advanced Neuro-Imaging can identify structural, functional and microscopic evidence of, Traumatic Brain Injury & Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy CTE.

During this presentation delegates will learn what is covered by the term Disorder of Consciousness at least as it applied with those with an insult to the brain and be able to distinguish between coma, the VS and the MCS. They will also understand some of the assessment procedures used to determine whether or not someone has a DOC and comprehend that differences in position may affect test results. The presentation will also cover one man’s story and why he made a good recovery from a DOC and the major characteristics of the LIS. It will present different accounts of people with the syndrome, what to expect in the way of recovery and possible ways to communicate with those with LIS. Finally it looks at the difficulties with assessment of such patients and some of the minor cognitive deficits that might be present.

This conference will look at the importance of reassessment in our practice and rehabilitation of clients over the longer term. There are a number of delegates who will be discussing and presenting with evidence of various case studies, outlining clients ongoing long-term rehabilitation, care needs and challenges around forming relationships/intimacy post injury.

This conference is the third in a series hosted by Re:Cognition Health. The aim of the series is to provide a forum to combine the rapidly emerging developments in neuroscience and neuro imaging with their application in clinical and medicolegal practice. This particular conference, like the second, will focus on one of the areas that generates the most debate amongst clinical practitioners – mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Controversy about the nature and cause of symptoms post mTBI has raged for over 150 years. Throughout this time, it was hoped that in the future diagnostic techniques would achieve a level of granularity to sufficiently dissect the pathophysiology, and shine a light on these ongoing controversies. This conference will share the latest insights in the field, with an emphasis on how relevant new data is to clinical and medico-legal practice.

Supporting sexuality after brain injury has always been a neglected and uncertain area for survivors, significant others and those who support them. Recent case law has only served to increase ambiguity and confusion further, resulting in a widening of the gap between need and support. This webinar will focus on what gives rise to sleep loss and to fatigue, and consider why both are prevalent after major trauma- particularly brain injury. I will show that confusing the origins and effects of sleep-loss and fatigue may hamper client’s progress.
