Not only because they are legally obliged to do so, but also to foster a supportive and inclusive culture, which values employee wellbeing and mitigates the potential impact on the business. Employers have a general duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of their employees. Employees must also take reasonable care of themselves and anyone who could be affected by their work. There is legislation relevant to addictive substances, including the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and The Road Traffic Act 1988. Employees will learn the harmful consequences of, smoking and vaping, alcohol and drugs and medication.

One of the biggest challenges facing line managers is addressing underperformance. It is often awkward to manage, with employees feeling ‘picked on’ or being asked to do the impossible. It can be compounded by difficulties such as the poor health of an employee, or temporary improvements in performance which soon disappear. In this advanced version of the workshop, we look at what to do when the first approaches have not worked. We also take a deep dive into court cases, and think about what the employer could have done differently in these situations.

There is no legal definition of bullying but employment arbitrator ACAS describes it as unwanted behaviour from a person or a group that is either, Offensive, intimidating, malicious or insulting, and, An abuse or misuse of power that undermines, humiliates, or causes physical or emotional harm to someone. The bullied person may find themselves in a position of inferiority, feel excluded at work, pushed to the margins of their team or feel forced to leave their employment. This course helps employees understand what is meant by bullying at work and what they should do if they see or experience bullying.

Cleaning work is used as a generic term for all activities to remove dirt and/or dust. These include, for example, floor cleaning, window cleaning, cleaning with a damp cloth or wipe, dusting, cleaning with chemicals, vacuuming and other suction methods or sweeping. This course aims to protect employees whose main role involves cleaning activities of some kind, to understand the hazards and the measures they must take to protect themselves when engaged in cleaning.

One of the most common areas of non-compliance relates to consent. Common errors include poor quality mental capacity assessments, consent being sought from people without any lawful basis and not recognising a deprivation of liberty. These are all a breach of Regulation 11, of The Health and Social Care Act 2008 and Regulation 17. This workshop has been designed to ensure social care providers, managers and key staff know how to comply with the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and the Mental Capacity Act to satisfy CQC expectations and protect the human rights of their service users.

The law covering computer working is the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 2002. You will often hear computers referred to as ‘DSE’ which is short for display screen equipment. DSE includes PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones. The regulations apply to workers who use DSE daily, for continuous periods of an hour or more. Your employer must protect you from the health risks of working with DSE. This training shows DSE users how to set up their workstation correctly and reduce the risk to their health.

Many disciplinary situations are straightforward. The employee has done something wrong, the process is followed and an appropriate sanction is given. Our immune system fights off infection from many micro-organisms, so that we do not automatically become ill every time we come into contact with a sick person. However, you can further protect yourself from infection by following some simple hygiene steps which we outline in this training.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), falls when working from height were the biggest cause of workplace deaths in 2022/23, accounting for the loss of 40 lives at work. Falls from height were also the cause of 8% of non-fatal workplace injuries during the same period, with many of these involving a fall off a ladder.
