Sound insulation of replaceable jack-up floating floor systems

Following current acoustic standards and using common testing equipment, it is difficult to mimic the effects of noise generated in gym areas, as the structure is not being excited at low enough frequencies. As no two buildings are the same, drop weight and in situ tests are recommended when designing acoustic floating floors for gym areas. There are many different types of noise being generated in these facilities. In many cases gyms are opening in existing buildings, where the extra weight and height of a wet system is not feasible, and a well-designed lightweight acoustic floor solution may be necessary.

This course presents the airborne sound reduction and impact noise isolation of lightweight floating floor systems and confirms that CLT-assemblies can provide satisfactory sound insulation. Results of lab measurements on different types of floor setups are shown, including floor solutions using discrete bearings with various thicknesses and/or different void depths and resilient mats and strips, and different floating floors such as plywood, particle and cementitious boards, with and without the use of constrained layer damping technique, as well as gypsum topping.

Buildings near roads or railways can be subjected to ground-borne vibration, resulting in unacceptable levels of structure-borne noise and vibration within. Base isolation helps mitigate this by introducing elastomeric bearings or steel springs between the building and its foundation. Although this is established practice, the available design guidance is limited. This course presents some findings from a theoretical study into the effectiveness of base-isolation for a building founded on piles adjacent to an underground railway.
