Executive Functions, An introduction
Connections In Mind
Executive functions are a family of three core brain processes, inhibitory control, working memory and cognitive flexibility. These three core executive functions work together in different ways resulting in a set of other high-order skills called executive function skills. There are 11 executive functions skills including time-management, organisation, planning, emotional control and response inhibition. This course will take you through 3 micro-modules (less than 12 mins each) designed to help you understand, Basic neuroscience behind executive functioning, How executive function challenges present in young people, How parents and teachers can work alongside their child/student to support the development of these skills.

Screening for Executive Function Skills Development
Connections In Mind
Learners in our care can present with executive function skills challenges. These learning differences are often associated with neurodivergence or trauma, which impairs the development of the prefrontal cortex so that learners find it more challenging to develop these skills. With clearer insights into the executive functioning challenges our learners face, learning support professionals can provide tailored screening and support to build self-awareness, identify skills gaps they can work on, and help teachers set work within their learners' zones of proximal development.

The Science Behind Behaviour, an approach which works for everyone
Connections In Mind
Over the last 30 years we have learnt so much more about how the brain operates. The evidence very clearly shows that traditional school behaviour policies are not aligned with what we now know about the brain's structure and function. In many cases traditional behaviour policies are actively (but not intentionally) discriminating against neurodiverse learners and those who have experienced trauma. Sadly in many cases these policies are unknowingly causing significant psychological harm.
