Motivational Interviewing

Training Course

About the CPD Course

Motivational Interviewing is a method that focuses on facilitating and engaging motivation within the individual in order to change behaviour. Motivational Interviewing is a goal-oriented, person centred counselling style for eliciting behaviour change by helping people to explore and resolve ambivalence. The main principle of this approach is around negotiation as opposed to conflict. In healthcare, it is a directive, patient-centred counselling style that aims to help patients explore and resolve their ambivalence about behaviour change. It combines elements of style (warmth and empathy) with technique (e.g. focused reflective listening and the development of discrepancy).
