“Breaking bad news” can be daunting, but this virtual one-day training session will provide delegates with the knowledge, tools and the confidence to deal with communication of harmful incidents, in particular informing families about patient deaths.

This one-day in-house course, led by an experienced Barrister and Accredited Mediator, covers the legal and professional regulatory framework surrounding the duty of candour, the background to the duty and what it means in practice. The training will include sessions on meeting and communicating with patients and families. It will also cover what is a notifiable safety incident (both in an NHS and non-NHS context), moderate and severe harm, making apologies, compensation, supporting staff, an overview of Root Cause Analysis and record keeping. The emphasis will be on developing the practical understanding of the key concepts and the skills needed to ensure compliance with the duty of candour.

This one-day course will cover duty of candour conversations, meetings to discuss incidents and complaints management. There will be a specific section on apologies and delegates will consider the challenges of having difficult conversations over the telephone, face-to-face and communicating in writing. This interactive course will be facilitated by two lawyers who have over two decades of experience of conducting independent investigations into incidents and complaints. The day will include practical exercises and role play.

This one-day/half-day course for healthcare professionals will clarify the principles of informed consent as well as provide an overview of the current law relating to treatment of those who lack capacity and, therefore, are unable to give informed consent.

Everyone working with or caring for adults who may lack capacity to make decisions must comply with the MCA and its Code of Practice. This course will give an overview and explanation of key parts of the MCA. It will cover the key principles of the MCA, explain in practical terms how to conduct a capacity assessment and describe how best interests decisions should be made. It will also cover the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, and provide an update on the Liberty Protection Safeguards.
