Understanding Natural Stone – From Geology to Garden Design

This two-hour CPD course provides landscape professionals and garden designers with the knowledge and confidence to specify hard landscaping materials effectively. The session explores the properties, performance, and practical application of key materials, including natural stone, porcelain paving, clay pavers, and composite decking. Through a combination of structured presentations, guided showroom tours, hands-on demonstrations, and interactive discussion, participants will gain a clear understanding of how material choice affects design intent, installation, maintenance, and long-term performance. The course also highlights common specification pitfalls and best-practice approaches, helping attendees deliver durable, sustainable, and well-considered landscape solutions.

Through a guided factory tour, participants will observe each stage of production — from raw material handling and cutting to finishing, sealing, and sustainability processes — to develop a comprehensive understanding of how these products are prepared for use in landscaping and architectural projects.

This CPD session explores the principles and best practices for protecting and maintaining natural stone. Led by Gary Timpson (Dry-Treat), participants will gain practical knowledge of pre-sealing, sealing, cleaning, and long-term aftercare. Real-world case studies illustrate how correct surface protection enhances visual appeal, extends the lifespan of materials, and reduces the need for replacement. Attendees will learn to specify appropriate products, advise clients confidently, and implement strategies that support sustainability, minimise waste, and safeguard the value of landscaping investments over time.
