Reducing the environmental impacts of the built environment has become a priority. As the built environment is a significant contributor to man-made emissions, it is imperative that we better understand the main causes of these emissions. Buildings generate emissions throughout their lifetime, from design, build, use and end-of-life disposal. While operational emissions from the built environment are significant, they do not account for the emissions generated through the construction process, the manufacture, transportation, and installation of its component parts or, for the disposal of these at the end of the building’s useful life. These emissions are known as Embodied Carbon.

While Global Warming Potential (GWP) provides a standard single number for assessing a refrigerant’s impact on the environment, it does not tell the whole story. Unfortunately, GWP is currently being used by environmental lobbying groups, Government and opposition parties to justify moves to ban HFC refrigerants completely. There are numerous technologies available today which can help building owners and managers provide comfortable and productive indoor environments while taking a low-energy approach. Products which combine heating and cooling, or hot water production with air conditioning can be used to ensure that energy waste is minimised.
