Anticholinergic burden (update)

This course is aimed at GPs, nurse prescribers, PCN and practice pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, medicines optimisation teams and community pharmacists. The course is comprised of six modules covering the background to AF and the risk of stroke, NICE clinical guideline 196 on the Diagnosis and Management of AF, the assessment of stroke and bleeding risks, the choice of anticoagulant, the safe use of DOACs in renal impairment, co-prescribing of anticoagulants and antiplatelets and the patient information required to ensure that anticoagulants are used as safely as possible.

This e-learning course is aimed at GPs, nurse, rescribers, PCN and practice pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, medicines optimisation teams and community pharmacists. The course has nine modules including the self-management and pharmacological treatment of asthma, asthma guidelines, the use of high dose steroids and steroid cards, review and follow-up and the COVID-19 pandemic for people with asthma. There's also two practical case studies covering the management of asthma in an adult and a child. It includes end of module quizzes and a final assessment with a pass mark of 70% being required to complete the course and receive a certificate.

The course covers cardiovascular statistics and risk factors, the recommendations in NICE CG181, the drugs used to treat hypercholesterolaemia, statins, ezetimibe, PCSK9 inhibitors, bempedoic acid, inclisiran and icosapent ethyl. There are five modules covering chronic pain management, the evidence for opioids in chronic pain and their adverse effects, review and safe withdrawal of opioids and patient and clinician resources.

There has been a marked and progressive rise in prescribing of opioid drugs in the UK over the past decade and the trend to increased prescribing continues. Opioids have demonstrable effectiveness in the treatment of acute pain and pain related to cancer but there is little evidence for the effectiveness of opioids for the treatment of chronic pain.This e-learning course will help equip healthcare professionals to tackle this growth in use and to improve care for patients with chronic pain.
