Managing medicines for adults receiving social care in the community, course 1 (2024)

This e-learning course identifies how the anticholinergic burden can be assessed for individual patients and provides three short case studies of medication reviews for patients with a high burden. It includes five modules and three case studies, plus quizzes and a final assessment. The learning from the course is supported by five videos about the practical application of each module to clinical practice.

This course is aimed at GPs, nurse prescribers, PCN and practice pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, medicines optimisation teams and community pharmacists. The course is comprised of six modules covering the background to AF and the risk of stroke, NICE clinical guideline 196 on the Diagnosis and Management of AF, the assessment of stroke and bleeding risks, the choice of anticoagulant, the safe use of DOACs in renal impairment, co-prescribing of anticoagulants and antiplatelets and the patient information required to ensure that anticoagulants are used as safely as possible.

The course covers cardiovascular statistics and risk factors, the recommendations in NICE CG181, the drugs used to treat hypercholesterolaemia, statins, ezetimibe, PCSK9 inhibitors, bempedoic acid, inclisiran and icosapent ethyl. There has been a marked and progressive rise in prescribing of opioid drugs in the UK over the past decade and the trend to increased prescribing continues. Opioids have demonstrable effectiveness in the treatment of acute pain and pain related to cancer but there is little evidence for the effectiveness of opioids for the treatment of chronic pain.This e-learning course will help equip healthcare professionals to tackle this growth in use and to improve care for patients with chronic pain.
