This Employment Professionals course offers practical advice to anyone involved in supporting someone with sight loss to either gain employment or retain their existing job, The course covers topics such as useful facts about sight loss, explores common eye conditions, and explains how assistive technology can help in the workplace, The course also includes basic advice on how to guide people with sight loss, Some additional downloadable resources have also been provided in the form of an employment assessment toolkit, supporting workbooks and information sheet.

Everyone is an individual and there are no set rules on how to guide people with sight loss, however the advice given in this course is safe and sensible. The course has a range of activities with different scenarios to cover indoor and outdoor guiding. There are subtitled videos with text transcriptions to demonstrate the different guiding techniques. As with all RNIB Learning, the course is accessible to screen reader users.

The course covers various inclusive design principles that can improve safety and wayfinding relating to national building guidance and regulations. This RNIB course is suitable for members of the Visibly Better certification as well as other interested parties who want to improve their knowledge of designing inclusive environments for people with sight loss. This can be undertaken as a single course or in conjunction with the RNIB Understanding Sight Loss course.

The aim of this programme is to help employers and work colleagues gain a greater understanding of sight loss, and the impact it can have on their employees’ working life. The course is in five sections and an optional short course on guiding people with sight loss is also available.

The Vision Friends training programme consists of five 1 hour training sessions across four modules, Understanding sight loss Identifying sight loss Accessing eye care services Creating an inclusive environment (4. Colour and tonal contrast and 4b. Lighting in the home). These four modules are supported by four corresponding sections in the toolkit, which provides additional resources and exercises to help delegates implement learning into practice.
