Learners will cover the theory behind legal obligations relating to fire safety, basis of how and why fire starts, principles of how to manage risks, ideas on how to work safely and understanding of the safety features of their workplace. The practical component of the session walks learners through an array of emergency situations to identify procedures for, raising the alarm, contacting the fire service, evacuating various styles of building and fire extinguishing.

This session is aimed at both nurses and nursing/care assistants that may perform venepuncture as part of their role. The course has a practical focus where learners are given opportunity to practice their technique in a lifelike simulated environment. Assessment will form part of overall clinical competence. Individuals are expected to return to the workplace and be supervised performing the procedure until deemed fully competent. The theory part of the course covers relevant anatomy, physiology, site selection, order of blood draw, infection control, ANTT and sharps safety. Learners are walked through the phlebotomy procedure and will discuss complications and troubleshooting.

Learners will leave the session with updated knowledge and skills relating to the grades of pressure sores, specific risk assessments relating to pressure sores and measures to prevent pressure sores from developing or further deteriorating.
