This multi-disciplinary five-day course provides an in-depth overview of the economics and governance of climate change, and the risks and opportunities they present for a range of organisations. The course begins with an intensive introduction to climate change as a scientific and particularly as a social-scientific issue, intended to bring students up to speed with the key concepts. The scientific evidence on climate change will be outlined and well-known controversies will be covered. Then the key concepts of climate-change economics and governance will be introduced, such as market failure, pricing carbon, and the tragedy of the commons. Public interest and concern around privacy has led to the development of data protection and privacy laws across the globe. Due to the complexity, far-reaching organisational implications and high fines for non-compliance the implementation of such laws has generated a high amount of interest among organisations who need to comply as well as professionals and new businesses which seek to profit from this change. This course employs a socio-technical lens designed to support students in developing an understanding of the changing legal environment shaping data law and policy. Foundational legal principles are contextualised within theories of how the legal landscape interacts with normative values, economic forces and design or architecture.

This seven-week programme, carried out by way of a two-hour seminar each Monday evening, examines the laws of war and international criminal law from the perspective of international human rights law. It confronts the crucial questions, are human rights law, the laws of war and international criminal law three distinct disciplines? Have they now become so entwined that it is not possible fully to understand one without some knowledge of the other?

This training will be held on a Monday evening over a 7 week period from February 6 - March 20 2017. This training is relevant not only to those who need to be able to apply the international human rights law framework to the law of war in their work, but also to those who are interested in the added value of human rights and in discussing and analysing all of these issues. It will be of will be of great strategic value for those involved in developing government policy and practice. Military lawyers will be able to update their knowledge.
