Oxplore Teach Module, Supporting Successful Transition from Primary to Secondary School

This Oxplore Teach module looks at research into the relationship between enrichment – learning that takes place outside the classroom or beyond the curriculum – and attainment. While studies have shown the benefits of enrichment for young people from backgrounds of disadvantage, they have also shown that access to enrichment activities can vary widely depending on factors such as socio-economic background and ethnicity. This module offers real-life teacher tips and opportunities to reflect on how teachers and other educators can help promote greater equality of access to enrichment.

This Oxplore Teach module looks at research into the importance of oracy – speaking and listening skills – for learners’ ability to engage with the curriculum in order to become and remain high attainers. It suggests some key tips for teachers and other educators to incorporate oracy teaching into classroom and super-curricular learning, and points towards additional useful resources.

This Oxplore Teach module introduces teachers and other educators to research about learners who are high-attaining at primary school and the rates at which they go on to become high attainers at secondary school and applicants to university. It demonstrates the importance of Key Stage 3 as a key point where young people from backgrounds of socio-economic disadvantage are more likely to see a drop in their attainment at school than their more-advantaged peers, and suggests some strategies that educators could use to support these pupils.

This Oxplore Teach module looks at research into young people from backgrounds of socio-economic disadvantage who went on to become high attainers at secondary school. Studies show that some of the factors that enabled them to succeed and thrive in education include high academic self-concept, self-efficacy and access to cultural capital. This module suggests ways in which teachers and other educators can support pupils to access these protective factors, including through free Oxplore Challenge activities.
