Introduction
The same debates generally return to education in different costumes. Knowledge or skills? Mindset or career readiness? Mastery of content or exposure to the real world? Each version is framed as a choice, and each version is usually a false one. The question is not which of these matters most. It is why we keep insisting they are separable, when students develop them together or not at all.
The habit is embedded in how most systems are designed. Knowledge comes first; application comes later. Students can spend years acquiring concepts, theories and frameworks on the understanding that this will transfer, eventually, into careers and decisions. Academic attainment remains the primary measure of success, while communication, collaboration, resilience, adaptability and self-awareness are often treated as desirable additions rather than core outcomes.
The intention behind this is sound. Academic knowledge matters, and students need strong foundations in mathematics, science, language and the humanities. The problem is not content. It is the assumption that content is sufficient — an assumption John Dewey challenged nearly a century ago when he argued that education is not preparation for a life to be lived later but a continuous reconstruction of experience, and that instruction detached from experience produces knowledge students cannot mobilise when it counts (1).
Outside the classroom, nothing arrives pre-separated. People solve problems while managing relationships, apply technical expertise while navigating ambiguity, and decide using both evidence and judgement. Competence is rarely a matter of what someone knows; it is a matter of what they can do with what they know, under conditions they did not choose. Yet many students spend years consuming information with few genuine occasions to use it, and can graduate with strong credentials and thin confidence.
The false divide between knowledge and skills
The most persistent misconception in this area is that knowledge and skills can be built independently. In practice they often cannot. A student cannot develop critical thinking without something substantial to think critically about. Communication does not develop through communication exercises; it develops when a student has to explain something difficult to an audience that does not already agree. Creativity emerges when knowledge is applied in unfamiliar conditions, not when it is rehearsed in familiar ones.
Mindset behaves the same way. It is not installed by a workshop or a motivational assembly. Research shows that beliefs about the malleability of ability shape how learners respond to difficulty — whether a setback is read as information or as verdict — and that those beliefs are formed and revised through what students actually experience when they struggle (2). Confidence is built by getting through something hard. Resilience is built by recovering from something that did not work. Adaptability is built by facing uncertainty and discovering that one can handle it.
Identity follows the same logic. Young people do not typically work out who they are by contemplating the question. They work it out through action, experiment and reflection — learning what holds their attention, what they will persist at, and what they are capable of. This is also why self-awareness belongs inside the curriculum rather than beside it. An established educational framework treats self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making as competencies to be taught and practised in the ordinary course of learning, not as a separate pastoral activity (3).
Knowledge, skills, mindset and identity are not four outcomes. They are four dimensions of one developmental process.
What experiential learning actually does
Experiential learning is a response to precisely this problem, because it integrates the dimensions rather than timetabling them separately. Its principle is simple: students learn most durably when they engage with ideas, apply them in a context that has consequences, and reflect on what happened.
A research model has defined learning as a cycle — concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualisation and active experimentation — in which the experience alone teaches relatively little. It is the reflection, and the conceptualisation that follows it, that convert an event into transferable understanding (4). This is worth emphasising, because “learning by doing” is often taken to mean that the doing is sufficient. It is typically not. An unreflected experience is an anecdote.
Where the cycle is completed properly, several things happen at once. Students draw on content knowledge while developing communication, collaboration and decision-making. They gain confidence from what works and resilience from what does not. And they accumulate the raw material for a sense of self that is grounded in evidence rather than aspiration.
What this looks like in practice
Experiential learning takes many forms, but the defining feature is constant: real problems, real audiences, real consequences.
- Project-based work. A student investigating environmental sustainability is not only learning scientific content. They are evaluating evidence, working with peers, communicating findings and proposing a course of action. The content remains essential — it becomes the instrument for solving the problem rather than the object of the exercise.
- Enterprise projects. Entrepreneurial experiences show the integration particularly clearly. A student developing a business idea has to apply numeracy, research, marketing, financial literacy and persuasion simultaneously, under uncertainty and in front of feedback. Failure is not a risk of the activity; it is part of the mechanism.
- Portfolios and capstones. Reflective assessment allows students to document not only what they produced but how they changed. It also builds a capability that is easy to overlook: the ability to articulate one’s own learning. Future readiness is not only capability. It is being able to recognise and describe that capability when it matters.
Why this matters more now
The world students are preparing for is being rearranged while they prepare for it. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 estimates that around 39 percent of workers’ core skills will change by 2030 and identifies analytical thinking as the skill employers most consistently rate as essential, followed by resilience, flexibility and agility, and by leadership and social influence — with creative thinking, curiosity and lifelong learning among the human capabilities rising fastest (5). None of these develops through passive instruction. Each requires participation, practice, difficulty and reflection.
Employers describe the same requirement in the language of readiness rather than knowledge. The National Association of Colleges and Employers defines career readiness through competencies such as communication, teamwork, professionalism, critical thinking and career self-development — capabilities demonstrated through behaviour, not asserted on a transcript (6).
The implication is not that academic knowledge has been devalued. Information has simply become abundant, and what now distinguishes people is what they do with it: how they interpret it, test it, apply it, and revise their approach when conditions change.
Future readiness should not be framed as a contest between academic learning, skills, mindset and identity. They are not competing priorities; they are interdependent parts of the same human development, and each is weakest in isolation. Content remains essential. Skills matter. Mindset matters. Identity matters. None reaches its potential on its own.
Experiential learning is the bridge between knowing and doing. It helps students understand not only what they know, but how to use it, why it matters, and who they are becoming while they do it. If we are serious about preparing young people for a future we cannot describe, we have to stop treating learning as something students receive and start designing the conditions in which they can experience it. Because future-ready skills are not taught. They are experienced.
